Chapter 10
Potlucks with my family could be outrageous. Potlucks with the diet group were one mess of delicious food as everyone tried to outdo each other as well as watch who was sticking to their diet or not. When fingers started pointing, you knew it was time to go home.
I stuck my crockpot filled with scrambled eggs, ground sausage, pepper chunks, and cheese between a cake pan filled with bacon-wrapped jalapenos and a casserole dish filled with ratatouille. Mom was not going to be amused with the vegetable dish. Eggplant and zucchini werenât what she considered breakfast or lunch ingredients. I ducked away from the three tables set up along the windows and looked around the gathering crowd for someone I actually wanted to talk to.
Dad waved me down from the other side of the room, standing at the water fountain with his hand in his pocket. He watched the group as I made my way over to him, side-stepping little groups that formed on their own.
When I reached him, Dad pulled me into his arms and squeezed me tight, laughing. âThere she is. Howâs my girl?â He had three of his four daughters there and Iâm sure heâd greeted each of us the same. However, that didnât bug me. I liked that he tried to treat us all the same. It actually felt like he cared about us and our feelings.
âHi, Dad. Whereâs Mom?â I didnât see her spritely curls anywhere in the room or hear her voice. She was a hard one to miss, but she was a little shorter than the rest of us so she could easily be hiding behind one of the taller people there.
The chairs in the room had been pushed back to make more of a circle and to give people room to mingle. Tables with food interrupted the circle of chairs but because of the food on them like a large altar, no one seemed to mind. Paper plates set up on one end of the tables mocked those of us who hungrily eyed the display. There wasnât a lot of room for very many more dishes.
As time inched closer to nine, I knew it would be like a mad eating frenzy at a farm when Mom announced it was time to start. Iâd be lucky to make it out alive, if I tried to be a first in line. Dad usually hung back at buffets or potlucks because he didnât like to be rushed through.
He pointed a finger toward the wall behind the weigh-in cubicles. âSheâs over there consoling Jessie about the comment she made a couple weeks ago. I guess a few of the girls have been kind of mean about it.â He shook his head. âI donât understand women. Youâre all supposed to be on each otherâs side.â
âYeah, but thatâs not how it works.â I looked for Bonnie. âDid Bon make it? I havenât had a chance to talk to her since Aaron went out of town last Monday.â With six kids, she might have opted to stay home instead of trying to get to the potluck.
